Mafia

A Mafia is a role given to a player, which is evil, and seeks the destruction of the village. All evil roles are collectively mafia or mafias, though they go by many different names, such as werewolves, vampires, robots, aliens, raid bosses, and even Team Venture. The common thread in any mafia is that they seek the destruction of the village, however they usually share several other characteristics.
- Mafias are usually networked at the start of the game.
- Mafias usually receive one or more group kills.
- Mafias are always smaller than the village population.
- Mafias have the ability to win the game by inevitability, instead of continuing the game until all opposition is destroyed. Typically this is when the mafia outnumbers non-mafia, and so controls the vote.
Additionally, the following characteristics are common for Mafias.
- Mafias are less likely to have additional powers, such as guards or seers, among their number.
- Mafias may receive more information about game mechanics than non-mafia players.
Most games contain at least 1 mafia faction, though some games contain none, and some games contain several different mafias. Mafias are different from other less-specific factions in that a mafia's goal is to win the game at the expense of a village. In a game where there is no discernible village, there is also no mafia.
Types of Mafia
There are a great many different types of mafia, however most can be simplified into one of a few groups.
- Mafia - Traditional mafia. This group starts networked and receives one or more group kills per night.
- Clueless Mafia - This type of mafia starts off not-networked, or only partially networked
- Dependent Mafia - This type of mafia loses powers when their members die. For instance, one of their group kills may be tied to a particular player, and if that player dies, they lose the power permanently.
- Independent Mafia - This type of mafia does not receive group kills, but their members may have powers they may use individually, such as kills or seerings.
Note that, often, mafias will take the form of more than one of these types.
